I’ll be honest, I’m not really in the mood to write a review of tonight’s game, but the remit is to review every game, so whilst this may be brief, here we go……
Heading North…..
The Pitch….
It was terrible, I went in the ground at 6.15pm and it was being heavily watered, (why?), We passed and moved the ball better in the 2nd half at Wycombe than I’ve seen us do for years, why the fuck would we intentionally engineer a playing surface not conducive to passing football?
Chris Maguire….
I saw him briefly before the Lincoln Pizza game in October, he said he had a lot of time for the fans, but if he scored he was running straight up to LJ and kneesliding…….as it happened he offered no threat that night. Ultimately he’s a shithouse, but I like that in a player, he was frozen out here after, (allegedly), having a birthday party that lead to the January postponements. He obviously doesn’t like LJ, but he’s a big game player, he can do some wonderful things on a football pitch, I don’t think it’s unfair to say that the fact he blows hot and cold is the reason why he’s had a career as a League One footballer?
Lincoln City….
They categorically deserved to win the game, crucially they did a great job on Pritchard and if he doesn’t play well, we don’t seem to play well.
Sunderland…..
After the way we played at the weekend, it’s perplexing to think we could be so, so bad just a few days later? Our ball retention was terrible, we were caught in possession numerous times, we lacked composure, we were incredibly narrow…. In short, we’re were fucking shite.
The Goals…..
Lincoln scored 3, they could have got more….
- #1 Rather than pay attention to a quick freekick, we were chelping at the ref. Sublime strike to be fair, Patterson may be disappointed having got such a strong hand to it?
- #2 Terrible, they had 3 on 2 from half way, we had 2 opportunities to make a tactical foul – I’m not advocating stopping play and getting a Yellow Card and conceding a freekick, but it’s preferable to standing off and waiting to secure a Red Card, a penalty and a sending off…. Hopeless lack of nous, I can guarantee Lincoln would have taken the yellow if the roles were reversed
- #3 Summed the night up, Gooch has played Premiership football, admittedly not very well, but he has bags of experience? He was the last man and opted for the volley from 50 yards through 9 players, sadly he got zero % ball and 100% air…. Cue comedy defending and the 2 defenders charging at the ball, leaving Maguire free to stroll through and score. Another good finish, but fucking hell man. I’ve been, (and remain), unconvinced by LJ, but individual errors and such incompetence must have him banging his head against the skirting board?
We needed to win tonight, sadly we never looked like winning- we go again Saturday, but from 3-2 with 30 seconds to play at Wycombe through to 9.35pm tonight, it feels like a very negative shift in momentum?
