Portsmouth vs Sunderland – SAFCBlog Thoughts…

Sunderland beat Pompey

Big game tonight, really big. Our form is good and theirs is shite, should be fairly straight forward?

Restless Natives….

Tweeting numbers is all well and good PompeyNewsNow, it might suffice on the South Coast, but the discerning readership of SAFCBlog DEMAND graphs….

So it’s a easy win then? Hopefully, but there’s plenty of possibilities…

Pros 2, (Bodey 16, Doyle 82) vsCons 2, (Fletcher 22, Godber 65)

The case FOR…. we’re the form team winning 5/6, whereas they have lost 4/5. They were a shambles at Northampton on Saturday conceding 4 first half goals to the leagues joint lowest scorers, (they also shipped 3 goals recently to the other lowest scoring team Bristol Rovers). The form suggests we should win tonight, if we play well we will win tonight, if we don’t play well we probably won’t win. Hopefully the combination of our current firepower and their defensive frailties should see us home?

The case against…. although we have a poor record down there, I don’t buy into that as a legitimate reason/excuse, it should have no bearing on tonight. The worry would be, can they carry on being so bad… their performance at the SOL in the Autumn was probably the best team performance we’ve faced this term. All is clearly not well at Fratton Park, Jackett is under pressure – but he’s no mug and he’s been here before. I actually think tonight is the toughest game we’ve had for a while? Fleetwood, Rochdale and Swindon are all crap sides, Portsmouth are just playing crap at the moment.

“Play up Pompey…… at least we won’t have to listen to those stupid fucking bells tonight?”

Atmosphere Athletic 2, (Curtis 18, Abbot 55) vs Closed Doors Crusaders 1, (Grayson 64)

Although it’s a long way, I love going to Portsmouth – the atmosphere under the lights is brilliant. Ordinarily I’d reckon no fans would suit us, given the unrest amongst their fans, it would probably have been a good night to have a crowd present.

Big Game…

If we win tonight I think we’ll kick on and win the league, the fact that we have won the winnable games of late means we don’t need to win tonight, a draw would keep the momentum going. A defeat is never ideal, it would be particularly bad tonight as given we don’t have a game at the weekend, most other teams will have played 2 games before we play Accrington next Wednesday, we can only take each game as it comes, but I just think we need to get into the top 2 – if and when we achieve this I believe we will stay there.

Bizarrely after our last Cup Final we played Accrington away and it was probably our best performance of the season, more of the same next Wednesday please Lads. Sunday is a strange one, obviously we may as well win it, but it’s not really getting me too excited. The potential highlight will be if Portsmouth win it on Saturday, it would be good to take it off them on Sunday? They should give us a guard of honour in full kit to present the Trophy to us.

Full Mental Jacket…

They want rid of Kenny Jackett, we want rid of Lee’s Jacket…. it’s akin to The Sorcerer & His Apprentice, or in the real world, The Station Manager & a Bus Driver…

Results✅ Team selection✅ Substitutes✅ Just lose the shit coat ❌

Its a really strange one, when you appoint Grayson you accept he’s here for a free trackie, Coleman did well with learning to tie his own shoelaces, Parkinson is old school training ground attire – but Lee…. he always looked great at Bristol City, he dabbled with a tweed and denim combo in the new year – I’m at a loss as to why he persists with the Club Issue Nike Coat. It’s like booking Graham Potter to open your shop and Brian Potter turning up?

What about the match you tinpot irrelevant knobber blogger?

Fair comment; on Sky tonight so saved £10, may as well have a £10 bet?

GAME ON……. 7.45pm…. LET’S GO TO WORK⚽️

No suprises – plenty good enough
Pitch looking good…..
Whilst the accessorising of scarf and manbag is a positive, the early signs are that the jacket will be worn tonight?
Yessssssss. Love it Lee. 2 coats will be enough tonight, just ditch the bus driver coat and it’s been a good evening

And we’re off….. pitch looks fantasic

12 minutes ….. corner after a decent effort from McGeady…. 💥⚽️💥 1-0

”on the 7th day……..”

36 minutes…. Portsmouth are dreadful, but it’s 1-0 and I guess they will have the odd chance? Fuck knows what’s happened to them as they were excellent at the SOL

half time….. crap game, winning 1-0. All good thus far

2nd half..

58 minutes…. job done, absolutely sublime finish from Jones🇬🇧, 2-0 … thankyou and goodnight, we are going up – 100%⚽️

SAFCBlog is a Not For Profit Organisation, if Ophra Winfrey asked me for an interview I’d tell her “thanks but no thanks, if I’ve got an issue with another blog, I’ll speak to them direct rather than do a shit TV show” – that said, eagle eyed regular graph analysts, will notice the odd advert creeping in to the Award Winning Corner Coefficient Graph Feature, (*), if anyone wants to sponsor a graph just let me know through the usual channels – there’s always a deal. Lost my blue pen, so Pompey are represented by brown pen.

76 minutes played and just 4 corners – although it does maximise advertising opportunities?

80 minutes….. a Portsmouth supporting pal had told me that Pompey were poor, hard to argue otherwise.

great performance…. onwards and upwards ⚽️

No league game this weekend, I’ll write some shite about the other League 1 fixtures and be back with the cutting edge stuff next Wednesday night ‘Live’ from Accrington, (exciting announcement soon).

I have on occasions referred to football as A Game of Opinions, I could be correct or otherwise, but we’re on the up in a big way….
