The New Season – Coventry at Home in preview…..

It’s seems like an age since Wembley, the waiting is finally over, on Sunday we start our Championship campaign at home to Coventry.

Are Coventry any good?

It’s hard to tell really, they deservedly went up a few seasons ago and have finished 16th and 12th in the second tier, given the nature of the division, if you’re not going down, the aim is probably a push for the playoffs?

It’s only preseason, but winning 5/5 games is a good preseason, 100%

The front two of Gyokeres & Godden, (dives a lot), got the thick end of 30 league goals between them last season, it’s no secret we are making a big step up, the realism is we can’t afford to gift chances at this level, as you invariably get punished for your mistakes.

He was a huge part of a great season last term, welcome back Callum. We obviously know his weakness, but given we play them in a couple of days…….running him into the ground to the point of mental and physical exhaustion, is not really an option.
Probably a bit early to read too much into the league table, but Coventry currently sit just outside the playoff places.

I’m not available for selection til the Bristol City game, fear not though….. a Guest Blogger has been secured to report on the game, (how much worse can it realistically be?).

Alex Neil last night….

Alex was never ever going to entertain wireless headphones…. not a chance

I like him, I like him a lot, he’s a proper manager. The key point for me to come out of last nights phone in, was the need to manage expectations. I’m all for optimism and getting carried away, but as he highlighted 3 of the last 4 play off winners have come straight back down. I reckon we’ll do ok, but lets be sensible. The first 3 games are Coventry, Bristol City and QPR, (3 average sides), the next 3 are against, Sheff Utd, Stoke and Norwich, (3 of the better sides), a good start will be huge, (and yes I’d say 5 points from 9, would be a good start). It would be great to beat Coventry, but not losing is also an ok start.
I’ve not, (to date), hosted a radio phone in on BBC Radio Newcastle, but what’s the point of asking for questions for Alex, and then not bothering to ask him?

Result on Sunday……..
