My Thoughts On Today…..

The Referee….

Refs are much maligned at the very highest level, understandably the officials in the 3rd tier generally reflect the quality of the football. Credit where it’s due, the ref today was very good – he could, (by letter of the law perhaps should?), of booked 6 players in the first 30 minutes, he didn’t…. The result was a really good watch.

Left Back….

Dan Neil has played a handful of games in midfield, today he played at LB. He was exposed on 4 occasions first half, McGeady offers plenty, but he’s not the man to cover the LB, the 1st half reminded me of the 1st half at Bolton when Hume had a similar 45 minutes. I know recruitment is ongoing, although the opening day has been a fixed date for some time…. Neil shouldn’t have been put in that situation today. His improved performance 2nd half was an absolute credit to the character of the lad

Gooch….

When Gooch plays well, we play well – he was our best player today

O’Nien….

Looks like he will play centre mid every week. Ultimately we need to get out of L1, the Championship is the next step. Although Luke is already a Championship player all day long

Stewart…

Not the finished article, but won a penalty and scored a goal. He was better than that chump with a wig that they had up front

Tactics…..

I didn’t think we’d win today, we did win and whilst Wigan aren’t great, they will be top 8 I’d reckon? It’s always a game of margins, if Gooch had hit the net not the bar, it’s game over? It’s not appropriate to criticise LJ, but I saw it as thus….. at 2-1 up, it looked easier to win the game 3-1 than 2-1? The moment we brought Bailey Wright on, we sat so deep it was untrue….. let’s be better than this
