Charlie Wyke is in fantastic form, top scorer in the division and oozing confidence. As often cited Football is a game of opinions, I love Charlie – I’m delighted it’s come good for him. I’m often wrong about things as we all are, I can genuinely say I was behind Wyke all along, he’s just got a great attitude and give me that any day over that lazy bastard Grigg, about whom I kept hearing just needed better service. We’ve all learnt this season that football is really about the people off the pitch, not those on it. I don’t know any of the Sunderland players, like many of us, I’ve met them from time to time. Just as Jordi Gomez couldn’t be arsed to take his headphones off for a photo with my kids, (I was his kit sponsor at the time too), Wes Brown took the time to stop, chat, ask questions etc. Football is real life and just as in real life, some people are better than others I guess? I’m not one to blow smoke up players arses….. Charlie takes a similar journey home to me, when you give him the thumbs up on the A19, (at no faster than 70mph), he waves, he flashes his lights, he raised a smile as my Savile Rogue SAFC scarf flew out my window and over his car into the distance – that’s obviously not irrelevant to what happens at 3pm on a Saturday ….. but he gets it, he’s a proper bloke and now also proving himself on the pitch.

Whilst signing injured players is not great business, CW was obviously carrying a few knocks when he first arrived in Wonderland, Jamie Lawrence who knows him well from his time at Bradford, says he’s the best striker outside of the Premiership. Whilst his attitude is great, I was starting to wonder whether it would happen for him on Wearside. I wrote this a year ago tomorrow, I’m delighted he’s fulfilled the potential….
