Grimsby town preview

Next Tuesday we entertain Grimsby Town at the SOL, in a cup game, (previously the Checkatrade Trophy – something else now). We got to Wembley last year, realistically we could do without the extra games? But…..

  • Winning games is good?
  • One day we’ll win a game at Wembley?
  • It’ll be the last season our 1st team ever play in this competition?

We are also the current joint holders of the trophy, after 120 minutes couldn’t separate us in the final last season.

Aiden McGeady– scored twice in Pompey’s biggest ever game

Prior to the knockout rounds commencing, we are in a group of 4, (us, Leicester U23’s and another team). Grimsby are a decent side to be fair, they are currently 7th in Division 4 – but SAFCBlog expects them to get promoted this season. Their best player is our player…..

Grimsby Town's best player is a Sunderland player
Surely we won’t let him play?

Much is made by their rivals that they play in Cleethorpes rather than the town of Grimsby…. no big deal though? Having recently been to watch us play Bolton, miles away from Bolton, who cares? Man Utd have also done ok historically playing in the City of Salford?

Whilst Jack Ross is clever, (author of children’s books), their gaffer is on another level; he is a graduate of Cambridge University in Economics and followed that up with a Post Grad in Sports Science at Stirling University, (Scotchland).

Micheal Jolley – If I was that clever I’d go on The Chase

Moving onto matters off the pitch, there’s plenty of decent famous folk from Grimsby……

Weather girl Keeley Donovan
Ignore any fat lasses singing about it raining men….. it’s bikini and solero weather”
Newsreader, Helen Fospero……
Today’s news………… and some of us grew up watching Angela Rippon??
Michele Dobrice….. “70s sitcom hottie”
Admittedly she’s no Felicity Kendal? But kids….. remember there was no internet in the 1970s?
Thomas Turgoose.
film was good…. Ch4 series have been the best TV this millennium bar none.
Duncan MacKenzie.
From Grimsby and played for dirty Leeds and Scotchland….
But, jumping over cars is definitely big and clever?

Also from the town is Julie Peasgood, who played Fran in Channel 4 soap opera Brookside….. as luck would have it, Brookside was the show that gave SAFCBlog Ambassador Anna Friel her big break…..

Can’t imagine Grimsby bringing more than a few hundred fans, I’m not arsed as it’s a home game; but it’s surely got to be quicker by sea than road?(assuming you’ve got a boat).

Nothing game – but SAFCBlog will be there and on hand to offer the usual cutting edge review of the 90 minutes.

SAFCBlog predicts

Sunderland 6 Grimsby 2

TV a game of opinions… but if there’s a better British actor than Stephen Graham, or a better TV series than This Is England….. I’ll eat a hat.
